In the first official confirmation that the slow-selling R-class will be retained, Mercedes-Benz chief Dieter Zetsche has said it will continue in its current form until at least 2015. “We need it for the Chinese market,” an insider told Autocar.
Also confirmed in Mercedes’ growing SUV ranks is a BMW X6 rival, called the MLC. Set to be built in
the US from 2015, it will receive a unique four-door body riding on modified M-class underpinnings. Engines will include a 571bhp

The expansion strategy is aimed at matching the projected growth rates of homeland rivals Audi and BMW through to the middle of the decade.

This is Honda’s new CR-V, which is being unveiled in remarkably realistic ‘concept’ form at the Geneva motor show next month.
Already launched in nearly identical visual form in the US, the CR-V is described as an ‘all-new’ model and will go on sale from the autumn and be built at Honda’s Swindon factory.
Although Honda remains tight-lipped on the details, it is expected that the CR-V will be fitted with company’s long-awaited 118bhp 1.6-litre diesel engine.

Shown on Wednesday: Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe.
What is it? At the Detroit auto show in January, Mercedes went to great lengths to tout the return of a 4-cylinder engine to the C-Class. Meanwhile, deep in the Stuttgart skunk works, engineers for the C63 AMG Coupe’s 6.2-liter V-8 toiled away with beeswax in their ears.

BMW Releases Details on M6 Coupe and Convertible

After a two-year absence, the BMW M6 coupe and convertible are returning to the German automaker’s lineup, with the hardtop scheduled to be unveiled at the Geneva auto show next month. The drop-top variant arrives at the New York auto show about a month later.

Powered by a 560-horsepower twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine, which is coupled to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, the M6 won’t lack for off-the-line performance. By BMW’s stopwatch, the coupe needs 4.2 seconds, and the convertible 4.3 seconds, to accelerate from zero to 62 miles an hour.
The enhanced power and speed can be enjoyed by four fully formed adults, another attribute of the M6, which would compete against hardcore grand tourers like the eventual AMG variant of the redesigned Mercedes-Benz SL.

With 2013 SL63 AMG, Mercedes-Benz Brings Fight to BMW

Mercedes-Benz has introduced the 2013 SL63 AMG, the higher-performance version of the 2013 SL550 roadster, which had its public debut at the Detroit auto show in January. It is scheduled to go on sale at an undisclosed price after the SL550 arrives in American showrooms this spring.

Powered by a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 developing 530 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque in standard trim, the SL63 can accelerate to 60 miles an hour in 4.2 seconds, Mercedes claims. As with other recent AMG products, a performance package brings heightened horsepower, up to 557, which would serve to shave 1/10 of a second from the car’s zero-to-60 number. And though top speed for the standard car is an electronically regulated 155 miles per hour, the performance version is allowed to run up to a claimed 186 m.p.h.

Honda is recalling almost 46,000 Odyssey minivans from the 2008-9 model years because the struts that support power liftgates on higher-priced models may fail, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In a document posted Wednesday on the agency’s Web site, Honda said it had concluded that a manufacturing flaw on Odyssey EX-L and Touring models equipped with power liftgates allowed pressurized gas to escape from the struts. The condition could result “in the liftgate closing under its own power, possibly unexpectedly,” the automaker said. Chris Martin, a spokesman for Honda, later wrote in an e-mail that the liftgate may “fall a short distance” before the system’s motor was engaged to support the tailgate’s weight.
